October 27 1962
When the tensions between US and Russia were already high on a fine day the Nuclear submarine B-59 was sailing near cuba. One of the officers in commad was: Vasili Arkhipov. The US started dropping depth charges ( explosives targeting submarines ).
The submarine was badly moving temperature went up to 70 degrees and more in some rooms. They had to decide on something. They thought it was the nuclear missiles which were fired by The US Navy and had to make a decision in merely a fraction of seconds. They had a nuclear torpedo too. Analyzing the situation, two senior officers in command gave the orders to load the Missile and fire. When Vasili Arkhipov, the third man in command comes into picture. He dissented, he told NO, not to fire the nuclear missile. He argued that US Navy just wanted the submarine to come to the surface and talk and tending no harm.
Taking a decision that save the world from a full-fledged NUCLEAR WAR. It's very tough to take such a decision in pressure situations, with 70 degree and more temperature and obviously not in the normal air ( Submarine). And he was right.
One more Heroic Decision:
September 26 1983
When the Soviet union's missile Defence system which was the most reliable system they had with them, displayed L_A_U_N_C_H. It sensed a huge attack from the US that 5 American ballistic missiles were coming in their direction. Not one, F-I-V-E. Officer in comand Stanislav Petrov, had to make a quick decision and report this attack as soon as possible and launch nuclear missiles in retaliation. He had to make a quick decision in no time whether to report and counter attack or just wait for some time.
And Yes, he waited. It was a false alarm from the "most reliable defence system" they had. It took SUN's reflection on cloud to be a missile and showed it on screen. These were the ones who saved millions of people with the wise decision made in chance in very stressful situations.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A full fledged nuclear attack from the Soviet Union in 1983, which had around 35K nuclear warheads, would have wiped off around 180Million(60-80%) of US population. And a counter attack from US would have caused around 120M lives of Russian people.
Lives of Around 300 Million people directly in a Matter of days.
